The Kelly School of Dance - Curriculum
Tap
Tap is an exciting rhythmical dance style that is truly American. While many teachers have tried to imitate the "Kelly" style of tap, this is its only true home.
The Kelly Style incorporates Irish and African methods in this all-American dance. As students progress, they study many different varieties of tap dancing. Students will study Broadway-style tap dancing, rhythm tap, hoofing, tap improvisation and many other tap techniques.
Ballet
Ballet is the most widespread and predominant dance form in the world. The Kelly School of Dance offers excellent technical training in the Russian technique, interspersed with Italian and French styles. The school is firmly rooted in the belief that today's dancers must be able to adapt to any choreographer's style, and therefore must be well-rounded, technically proficient and as fast thinking as possible. A student who has studied three or more years of ballet technique may begin Pointe, at the teacher's discretion, while continuing regular weekly technique classes.
Jazz
Jazz is an electric, exciting style commonly seen in contemporary musical theater, television and movies. It is a dance style that belongs exclusively to our American culture. Our particular jazz style is based upon the techniques of Luigi, Gus Giordano, Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon and Charles Kelly -- all of whom are great masters in the art of jazz. Jazz class cannot be taken without also taking ballet or tap.
Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is a modern spin on the old jazz classics. Hip-Hop is most recognizable from popular television shows and on music videos. Kelly School of Dance offers a fusion of East Coast and West Coast hip-hop with pop-and-lock as well as street and old-school styles.
Stretch & Turn
Stretch & Turn class is a one hour period each week offered to the student who wants to learn or improve flexibility, strength and turning ability. This is predominantly for the serious dancer. Students must be enrolled in another class to participate in the Stretch & Turn sessions, and must have a minimum of two years previous dance training.
Combo 1, 2 & 3
The Combo 1, 2 & 3 classes are designed to prepare children (ages 3 - 5) for technical dance classes. Lessons include rhythm and counting exercises, movement concepts, strengthening exercises and body control games. Basic ballet foot positions, port de bras (arm movements) and classroom etiquette are taught gently, but firmly.
